In the year 198 of the Solar Era in Tokyo, special fire brigades fight against a phenomenon known as spontaneous human combustion, where human beings turn into living hells called "Infernal." While the Infernals are first-generation cases of spontaneous human combustion, subsequent generations possess the ability to manipulate flames while still maintaining a human form. Shinra Kusakabe, a young man who earned the nickname Devil's Footprints due to his ability to ignite his feet at will, joins Company 8 of the Special Fire Force, which is made up of other flame users, as they work to extinguish any Infernals they encounter. As a faction that creates Infernals emerges, Shinra begins to uncover the truth behind a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family twelve years ago.
